The cover comes off sometime in April.

You walk around the car once, maybe twice. The battery gets a charge. You check the fluids, check the tires, and make a mental note of the things you meant to address before storage that you didn't quite get to. And somewhere in that walk, the season starts to take shape. The show you've been thinking about since January. The track day that's been on the calendar since February. The first real drive of the year.

The car gets the attention. The hauling setup usually doesn't, until you're standing behind an open trailer trying to remember exactly how this went last fall.

What Winter Does to the Equation

Storage changes things you don't always account for.

Some of it is obvious. Tire pressure drops. Connections corrode. A trailer that sat outside through a wet winter looks different in April than it did in October.

Some of it is less obvious. If you did any build work over the winter, a new front splitter, lowered suspension, wider wheels, or a body kit, your car's clearance profile may be different from what it was the last time you loaded it. What cleared the ramp in October may not clear it in April. That's not a guess. It's geometry. The ramp angle doesn't change. The car's lowest point does.

Measure Before the First Haul

Before the first haul of the season, measure the actual ground clearance at the lowest point of the vehicle in its current configuration. Not the number from memory, and not the spec sheet — the actual measurement with the current setup, on the current suspension, with whatever was added or changed over the winter. That number determines what your trailer needs to do.

The Track Day Reality

Car shows give you time. You arrive, unload carefully, and the car sits on flat ground for the rest of the day.

Track days are different.

At a track event, you're loading and unloading multiple times across one or two days. You're doing it in paddock spaces that aren't always perfectly flat, often alone, often between sessions when you're also managing tire pressures, brake temps, and everything else that comes with a day at the circuit. The hauling process runs in parallel with the rest of it, and a loading setup that demands careful management every time is one that takes something away from the day rather than just getting the car there.

A few things that matter specifically for track day hauling:

Loading in a paddock without a spotter.

Paddock surfaces vary. A ramp that sits level in your driveway may sit slightly differently on uneven ground. Without someone watching from behind, you're managing the approach entirely from the driver's seat. A loading system that removes the variables, alignment, angle judgment, and ramp stability, works the same way every time, regardless of surface conditions.

Clearance after a session.

A car with a lowered front end, a splitter, or dive planes is already running minimal clearance in normal conditions. After a session, when the suspension may have settled, or the car is sitting slightly differently, the margin at a ramp transition doesn't get more generous. It gets less.

Turnaround time.

Some events run tight schedules between sessions. A loading process that takes under two minutes versus one that takes eight or ten is a real difference when you're trying to make a grid time.

What the Trailer Actually Needs to Do

For a collector car or a track car with a front splitter under five inches, there's one specification that matters more than any other.

Loading angle.

A standard ramp trailer loads at 14 to 18 degrees. At that angle, a vehicle sitting 3.5 inches off the ground at the front splitter is making contact at the ramp-to-deck transition on nearly every load, regardless of approach speed, regardless of how carefully it's done. The geometry doesn't negotiate.

The other specification worth attention is the deck surface. For a show car or a car with meticulous wheel and tire presentation, the surface your car loads onto matters.

Solo Loading After an Event

There's a practical detail that doesn't come up in spec sheets but matters in real use.

After a track session, the driver has to exit the loaded car. On a conventional ramp trailer with the car elevated at deck height, typically 22 to 28 inches above the ground, getting out of a low-slung sports car and stepping down cleanly is awkward at best. For cars where the door sill sits close to the ground in normal conditions, it's genuinely difficult.
