Getting Your Trailer Ready for the Season: What to Check Before the First Haul
The trailer sat through the winter.
Maybe in a shed, maybe outside, maybe somewhere in between. It looks fine. You've used it for years, and it's always been fine. So you hook up and go.
Most of the time, nothing goes wrong. But the issues that develop during winter storage, on ramp hardware, in wheel bearings, at electrical connections, are quiet ones. They don't announce themselves until you're on the road or in the middle of a load. That's not when you want to find them.
A thorough pre-season inspection takes less than an hour. What it catches can save considerably more than that.
What Winter Actually Does to a Trailer
A trailer sitting idle through winter faces conditions it doesn't deal with during active use.
Temperature cycling, repeated freezing and thawing, works at every joint, fastener, and connection that has any existing wear or looseness. Moisture finds its way into electrical connections, ramp hinges, and any area where coatings have been scratched or worn through. On steel trailers, that moisture starts corrosion processes that are invisible until they've already done meaningful damage. Aluminum trailers don't rust at the frame or deck, that's the nature of aluminum construction done right, but mechanical components still need the same attention regardless of what the frame is made of.
Tires lose pressure even without a puncture. Bearings that weren't properly packed before storage can dry out. Tie-down hardware that wasn't cleaned and stored properly corrodes or stiffens. None of it is dramatic. All of it is worth finding before the first haul.
Work Through It Systematically
The fastest way to do this inspection is also the most thorough: start at one end and work to the other. Don't jump around. You'll miss less.
Tires and wheels
Check tire pressure on every wheel before you move the trailer. Tires lose one to two PSI per month in storage, so a tire that was correctly inflated in October may be noticeably low by April. Check the sidewalls for cracking. Tires that sat in one position through several freeze-thaw cycles can develop sidewall weathering, particularly if stored in direct sun.
Check the lug nuts on every wheel. Torque them to spec if you have a torque wrench. Wheels that have been stationary for months sometimes benefit from re-torquing, particularly on steel wheels, where surface rust at the hub contact face can affect clamping force.
Bearings
If you didn't repack the bearings before storage, put a bearing inspection on the pre-season list. Spin each hub by hand and listen for grinding or feel for roughness. Bearings that weren't properly lubricated before the trailer sat, or where moisture got into the hub, may have corrosion or dry spots that need to be addressed before highway use.
Don't Wait on Bearings
Bearing failure is one of the most common causes of roadside trailer problems. It's also almost entirely preventable. If you're unsure of the last time bearings were repacked, do it before the first haul of the season. It's not complicated work, and it's much easier to handle in your driveway than on the shoulder of a highway.
Lights and electrical
Connect the trailer to your tow vehicle and check every light, brake lights, running lights, turn signals, and reverse lights if equipped. Trailer light connections corrode over winter, particularly at the plug end, and a light that worked in October may not work in May.
Walk the wiring along the trailer frame and check for damaged insulation. Rodents find trailer wiring useful during winter storage, and chewed insulation is a fire risk that's easier to find now than after it's caused a problem. Clean the electrical plug with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before the season starts. Two minutes of work that significantly extends the life of the connection.
Ramp hardware
This is where steel trailers show winter wear most visibly. Check the ramp hinge pins for rust and stiffness. Significantly corroded pins may need to be replaced before the ramps can be operated safely and without binding.
Check the ramp latch mechanisms. A latch that doesn't seat or hold securely is a safety issue, and a ramp that releases unexpectedly during loading or transport is a serious problem. Don't manage around it through the season. Fix it before the first haul.
Lubricate all ramp hinges and moving hardware before use. Clean off rust or corrosion buildup, assess whether it's surface rust that can be treated or structural rust that affects the component's integrity, and replace anything questionable. The cost of a ramp hinge pin is not worth trading against the alternative.
On aluminum trailers, the ramp hardware deserves the same attention, even though the structural frame doesn't rust. Hinge pins, latch mechanisms, and other steel hardware components on aluminum trailers are subject to the same corrosion concerns as on steel trailers.
Deck surface
Walk the full deck and look for damage, cracks, bent sections, and soft spots that developed during the previous season or in storage. On aluminum decking, pay particular attention to the extrusions at the edges and any area that took direct impact from equipment.
Clean the deck surface before the first haul. A deck carrying winter grime, leaf debris, or moisture under a cover isn't giving your equipment the clean, stable surface it should be loading onto.
Tie-down anchors and chains
Check every anchor point for security and condition. Anchors that are loose, bent, or show significant corrosion should be replaced. A tie-down anchor that fails under load is a load security failure, and the consequences of that aren't minor.
Inspect your chains and straps. Chains that developed rust through the winter may have compromised links. Straps stored wet or in direct sunlight may have degraded webbing. Any tie-down hardware that's questionable gets replaced, not worked around.
Frame and hitch
Do a visual inspection of the trailer frame from below. Look for cracks, bends, or damage at connection points. This is where fatigue accumulates over time, and spring is the right moment to catch anything that developed during the previous season before it progresses.
Check the hitch coupler for smooth operation and secure locking. Clean and lubricate the coupler mechanism. Check the safety chains and the breakaway cable if your trailer is equipped with electric brakes.
What the Inspection Looks Like Differently on Aluminum
The same categories apply to both trailer types. What you find is typically different.
On a steel trailer, the inspection often turns up surface rust at welds, ramp hardware, and anywhere the coating has worn through. Some of it is cosmetic. Some of it is worth treating before it progresses. The weld points at high-stress areas of the frame deserve particular attention — that's where fatigue and corrosion work together over time.

Over the years, that difference in what the spring inspection finds and what it doesn't find is one of the practical advantages of aluminum construction that doesn't show up in the purchase price comparison but becomes clear in the reality of ownership.
Setting Yourself Up for an Easier Spring Next Year
The best pre-season inspection is one that doesn't turn up much, because the end-of-season storage was done right.
Before putting a trailer away for winter:
- Clean the trailer thoroughly, including the deck and the undercarriage. Debris and moisture held against metal surfaces is what drives corrosion through the winter months.
- Repack or inspect the bearings before storage, not after. Bearings that go into winter with fresh grease come out in spring in good condition.
- Lubricate all ramp hardware and moving components. Clean off existing rust, apply a rust inhibitor to exposed steel components on the ramp mechanism, and store ramps in the closed position if possible.
- Cover the electrical plug connection. The connector is the most corrosion-vulnerable point on the trailer. Protecting it before storage costs nothing.
- If the trailer is stored outside, a quality cover protects the deck from UV exposure and keeps debris from sitting against the surface all winter. If stored inside, make sure there's adequate air circulation — a damp, sealed space can drive as much corrosion as outdoor storage.
The trailer that goes into storage clean, lubricated, and covered comes out in the spring ready to work. That's the version of spring startup that takes less than an hour, finds nothing significant, and gets the season started on schedule.
