Most trailer buyers get the weight right.

They spec the GVWR, confirm it covers the equipment, check the tow vehicle rating, and feel good about the purchase. Then they back up to the job site, load the machine, and realize the number they didn't check was the one that actually mattered.

Width.

A standard equipment trailer deck runs 82 to 83 inches wide. For the majority of compact construction equipment, that's adequate. But the machines that push against the upper end of the weight scale are often the same ones pushing against the upper end of that deck width. When both limits converge, a standard-width trailer stops being the right tool, and there's exactly one configuration that solves the problem cleanly.

Why Standard Decks Fall Short

A standard trailer deck runs between the fender wells. The fenders define the outer edges of the usable surface, and the result is typically 82 to 83 inches of working width.

For most compact equipment, standard-frame skid steers, smaller mini excavators, and ATVs, that's enough. But here's where the math gets tight:

  • A Bobcat T76 compact track loader runs 72 inches wide. On an 82-inch standard deck, that leaves 5 inches of clearance per side. Technically enough to get the machine on the trailer. Not enough to position it correctly, achieve proper tie-down placement, or feel confident on a highway haul.
  • A Kubota KX057-5 mini excavator runs 79 inches wide. That leaves less than 2 inches per side on a standard deck — functionally, no clearance at all.
  • A John Deere 5E series tractor with a front loader can reach 88 inches. It doesn't fit on a standard deck.

This isn't a rare edge case. It's the daily reality for a meaningful portion of contractors, agricultural operators, and construction crews. And it's the problem the Deck Over was built to solve.

What a Deck Over Actually Does

A Deck Over moves the deck above the fender wells rather than between them. The fenders drop below the deck surface, and the usable width extends to the full outer edge of the trailer frame.

For a machine at 79 inches wide, that's nearly 10 inches of clearance on each side. A Note on "Marginal"

At 72 inches on an 82-inch deck, you have approximately 5 inches per side. You can get the machine on the trailer, but you can't position it correctly or achieve proper tie-down placement. Loading Wide Equipment Correctly

The right trailer solves the clearance problem. Loading it correctly is the other half.

Center the load.

On a wide deck with adequate clearance, centering matters more than it does on a tight-fit standard configuration. An off-center load distributes weight unevenly across the trailer axles and affects tongue weight on the tow vehicle. Use the deck edge as a reference and load to the center before securing.

Measure the full configuration, not just the machine.

The widest point is often the attachment, a front loader bucket, a grapple, or a mowing deck. Measure the widest point of the fully configured machine before confirming trailer clearance.

Use the full tie-down point spread.

A wide deck gives you room to position tie-down chains at the machine's OEM anchor points with proper geometry. Use it. Know your legal width.
